Healthy for Life

Healthy for Life is a school-based physical activity and nutrition program administered through the Community Benefit department of St. Joseph Health-Sonoma. Healthy for Life focuses on building school capacity to support healthy eating and physical activity among its students. This program includes teacher and staff training in evidence-based physical education (such as SPARK and CATCH), which provides tools to incorporate physical activity into classroom teaching along with nutrition education.

Target Outcomes

Short Term Outcomes

  • Children will maintain or lower their BMI
  • Increase in children physically active after school 2 or more hours per day
  • Increase in children eating breakfast 6 or more days per wee
  • Children will eat 5 or more servings of fruit and/or vegetables 3 or more days per week

Long Term Outcomes

  • Reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in target schools serving low-income neighborhood
  • An increase in fruit and vegetable consumption in member schools
  • An increase in physical activity in member schools
  • Improved academic achievement for participants
  • Decrease in chronic disease for participants
