Functional Family Therapy

Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is an empirically grounded and highly successful family intervention program for at-risk youth ages 10-18. This model works within the family to transform maladaptive coping mechanisms, building positive skills and connections for youth to resources that will match their particular risks and needs, whose problems range from acting out to conduct disorders to alcohol and/or substance abuse.  Families receive case management and 8-12 mandatory FFT sessions focused on the youth and involving family member(s).

The FFT model includes: 1) reducing negativity, blaming and a sense of hopelessness; 2) providing validation, positive interpretation, reattribution, reframing and sequencing; 3) behavioral and skill-building - enhancing communication skills, parenting skills, anger management and problem-solving techniques; and 4) family case management guided by family and individual needs.
