Breastfeeding Peer Counseling

Breastfeeding Peer Counseling increases the exclusivity and duration of exclusive breastfeeding in the Wic population through the services provided by peer counselors. Participants receive regular phone calls prenatally from the peer counselor followed by six months of postnatal individual and group breastfeeding support.

Short Term Outcomes

  • Increase in exclusive breastfeeding for infants
  • Increase in exclusive breastfeeding duration to six months
  • Decrease in exclusive formula feeding

Long Term Outcomes

  • Improved health outcomes of the mother-baby dyad
